TEST DRIVE.

test drive

Firstly, thank you for your interest! Secondly, since the game hasn't begun and therefore characters haven't actually gone to a world yet, this test drive is going to be a little different. It's intended to be presented as a mini-mission of sorts, on a much smaller scale and timeframe than a real mission in-game but with a somewhat similar feel. Because of this, if you join the game, you're allowed to count this as game canon, so make sure you make choices you want to follow your character into the game!

You know how this works, so go forth and have fun, and don't forget to reserve!

BASICS

Anwick might have been a beautiful town once. It's hard to tell now, since most of the buildings are scorched and crumbling, but they do resemble some rural modern-day buildings. Likewise, the people don't appear to be living too much in the past; several are carrying intimidating guns. For years, Anwick has been terrorized by dragons, living in fear of the next attack. Not anymore.

The people have just ended a bloody battle. Several people limp towards the outskirts of town, holding their bleeding wounds or new burns. In the center of town lies a slain dragon, the last full-grown one left in the world. To be honest, it looks like they've already taken care of their own problem.

A monotonous voice comes through your communication device to explain. You aren't here to help the townspeople; you're here for the dragons. The one motionless on the ground may have been the last adult, but it certainly wasn't the last dragon. Her children are located in a nearby cave, alone and orphaned. They're the ones you need to protect.

WYRMLINGS

The wyrmlings are still growing up, only the size of a small dog. Each has a slightly different appearance, but all of them have at least a few bright copper scales. They're beautiful, and they look a little bit harmless... at least, until they notice you. These dragons have never been exposed to humans before. Or anyone outside of their family, for that matter. They're small and scared, and they don't know any other way to protect themselves than to attack. Luckily, because of their tiny size, they can't do much more than small burns at a time — but make no mistake, it still hurts like hell.

The cave they're located in is pitch-black and labyrinthine. Every footstep echoes throughout it if you aren't light enough on your feet. It'll be difficult to navigate if you don't MacGyver yourself a torch or other form of lighting. Cell phones will work decently, at least until their battery dies, but you don't want to get stuck deep within the cave with no light.

If you do manage to get through the cave and rescue some without getting burned to a crisp, the trouble's not over yet. You'll have to find a safe place to stash them until they can be relocated; the townspeople aren't done with their dragon-slaying yet, after all. Walk into town with one in tow, and you're putting a target on your back. (Of course, this doesn't mean you can't do it.)

PROMPTS

ONE ✗ GOING ROGUE
Not feeling too obedient? Maybe you're ignoring the orders and helping the wounded people in town instead... or just coming to gawk. Maybe you're coming to slay the wyrmlings yourself. Whatever it is, at least try to be sneaky about it.

TWO ✗ THE DRAGON'S CAVE
Try to navigate the cave, fail to navigate the cave and get lost, or try to take the wyrmlings without getting barbecued. Somehow, you get the feeling that you aren't alone. Those footsteps are probably just your imagination... or they could be townspeople coming to kill you and the dragons. Of course, they could also be an ally, but you'd better hope you don't find out.

THREE ✗ HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
You've gotten the dragon(s) to a secure campsite out of town, but the fun's not over yet. They're kind of freaking out a little. Some of them are still spitting fire. Even the less aggressive ones are crying shrilly, bound to attract townspeople or at least annoy everyone nearby. It can't be too hard to calm them down; they're basically scaly, fire-breathing babies, right?

FOUR ✗ NIGHT TIME
It's been a long day, and now it's time for the crew to sleep. Get to know your tentmates, try to ignore them, pray that they don't want to bring along a wyrmling to cuddle... or maybe you've been put on night watch with a few others, in which case you'd better find a way to pass the time until your shift's over.

FIVE ✗ CHIT CHAT
Network option! Maybe you've got a little downtime and you're bored. Or maybe you're frantically asking the rest of the team how bad a dragon bite is. Maybe you're just trying to figure out how the hell this magical jewelry thing works. No matter what, you get one username to identify you and one only — if you don't enter one, it will default to your real name (for example, Voldemort's would be tomriddle.) Choose wisely... or make it assfarts69, if that's your thing. More information on the network is here!

SIX ✗ WILDCARD
Do whatever the hell you want. Explore the ashes of the burned city, try to run as far away from this crap as possible, or try to teach a wyrmling tricks. The world is your oyster.

You don't look like you're very happy to be here. Bad luck with dragons today? [From the way this guy is carrying himself, Harry doubts that it has anything to do with dragons. For one thing, he's not wearing any burns that Harry can see, and for another, he looks like an odd mixture of bored and frustrated. Or maybe he's recognizing another emotion there, he isn't certain.

Harry, for his part, looks worse for wear. While he has knowledge and experience with dragons, much of the magic he'd need to be able to handle today is in Hermione's head. It isn't that he minds not knowing it, and he's been trying to remember all of the necessary spells to patch himself up, only he's been coming up empty. He'll work on it. With what they're here to do, he might as well do his best.]

[ ah, caught. he turns around on his heels slowly to face him.

Loki had pawned off the dragons on his fellow quest-goers at least an hour ago. the burns had only warranted a change in shirt, and honestly, it was more the dragon whining than the actual dragons themselves. children weren't his forte, not even when they were of another species.
]

Ah—yes. Them. Terribly mercurial, aren't they? [ he tosses up his hands. ] I have some tricks under my sleeve that saved my better pair of slacks. Dragons do have a tendency to get their fire all over everything.

As for me? Well, I'm not the "stay in one place for long" sort of person.

I wasn't given the impression that we'd be here for very long. Are you that impatient to get a move on? [Is Harry so rude that he can't resist from asking this question? Truthfully, he's curious. This whole situation is new to him, too, but the idea of saving worlds isn't foreign to him. Naturally, his approach to Voldemort was stopping him before he threatened the whole of the world, but he had his sway over quite a few, even if he had largely centralized his attacks in England proper.]

Not that I'd mind something that doesn't involve dragons myself, [he adds, hoping that it tempers his initial question a little.] I was never very good at dealing with them. [Flying around them, yes, but dealing? Hardly.]

[ Loki puts his hands on his hips, his lips quirking into a slightly exaggerated frown. ]

It's more about dragons and me not really mixing well. [ he flutters his dark nailed fingers in the air and then tosses them back carelessly. ] I'm more about a little B&E and casino heists—that's my kind of challenge.

And this? [ the frown deepens a little. ] It seems more an errand with a needed form of payment rather than a wanted one.

[Maybe it's unfair (it's a little unfair), but Harry finds himself judging this guy for wanting a particular challenge in saving the world. Dragons are annoying enough, but that he wants something with his particular flair of adventure leaves Harry not knowing what to say. He does his best to keep his expression cool and collected, though.]

We are here to save this world, [he says, careful in his delivery so he doesn't sound like he's chiding him. He comes very close to that anyway.]

I'm certain we'll have something like that down the line.

[And it's not like Harry hasn't had his moments of being bored, but he's not going to beg for trouble that he'll inevitably find. And so far, none of the townspeople have been overly angry about their ventures into caves, but the more they're helped, the better they'll get ... and then things might become troublesome.]

[ challenge for Loki usually was a little different. there were plenty of hero-types around here, and they generally nosed their way into the spotlight. ]

So we are, and everyone seems to be doing a fine job of it. My skill set is, well, not entirely within this range. I'm usually inclined toward the less savory. [ he wiggles his fingers a little bit in Harry's direction. ] Heists, lying, a little B&E. That kind of thing. The dragons are best left to those that would handle them better.

[ which isn't him, really. ]

Though I'm sure I can make myself useful.

[ then there's a pause while he looks them up and down, and he shakes his finger as if he's looking for the words. ]

[Despite not smelling like alcohol, looking like he's wearing rags of robes, and having a lot of gray hair, Harry finds himself reminded of Fletcher the moment that Loki insists upon his skill set. It sounds to him like he has a very narrow scope of what he wants from this situation.]

Lying, you say. So why would anyone believe that's all you're good at? [Maybe it's not fair to him, but he goes on to add:] I think we could use a liar or three. The townspeople aren't happy about what we're doing, and someone who can put them at ease, and pry some information out of them—that could do a lot of us some good. We'll be more aware of what's happening. You can put together a lie to get that out of them, can't you? [And maybe even find something to steal in the process, if he's so desperate.

Harry knows that Mundungus wasn't the easiest to convince, but he doesn't think it hurts to try to get this guy on board with everything. They need all the help they can get, since rescuing dragons only seems to be a portion of this mission.]

[ Loki crosses an arm over his waist, leaning the other hand over the other, holding his fingers to his cheek. he leans on his hip as if he has a moment to observe him as he says that, eyes tactlessly raking him up and down as if there's something to catch. ]

You really do want to put me to work, don't you?

[ it's more of Loki's bubbling defiance than anything legitimate.

but for a moment he stills as his eyes go to Harry's forehead and then back to his face.
]

Very well, count me in, I'll take my wordplay and smooth talking to the taverns. Where else would this at ill-ease be?

[personal profile] livedtwice 2015-09-20 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
We're all here to work, [Harry retorts.] Though now you get to work and have a little more fun, it sounds like. [Someone sitting at the sidelines pretending he's too good for this work—specifically, helping a world—while having the necessary skill set does bother him a bit. That he's convinced him makes Harry feel a little better about this conversation.

Maybe they shouldn't be here, but their work isn't necessarily bad, now is it?

When his eyes move over Harry's forehead, he resists the temptation to push his hair down over his scar. These days, the scar has taken on different meaning, and he half-expects a remark about him being Harry Potter.

Only it doesn't come.]

"Fun." You could call it that.

[ "helping a world" is still up in the air for him. who says that condemning this world to a specific future was really good for it? Loki snorts a little at his own thoughts. ]

Moreso that I'll be a bit more help than I would be burnt and crispy.

Sitting around not wanting to do things just because you don't like it might be worse than being burnt to a crisp. [Of course, Harry has had his moments of wanting to grumpily sit things out, but this is different.]

At least you'll be able to say you kept yourself busy.
