TEST DRIVE.

test drive

Firstly, thank you for your interest! Secondly, since the game hasn't begun and therefore characters haven't actually gone to a world yet, this test drive is going to be a little different. It's intended to be presented as a mini-mission of sorts, on a much smaller scale and timeframe than a real mission in-game but with a somewhat similar feel. Because of this, if you join the game, you're allowed to count this as game canon, so make sure you make choices you want to follow your character into the game!

You know how this works, so go forth and have fun, and don't forget to reserve!

BASICS

Anwick might have been a beautiful town once. It's hard to tell now, since most of the buildings are scorched and crumbling, but they do resemble some rural modern-day buildings. Likewise, the people don't appear to be living too much in the past; several are carrying intimidating guns. For years, Anwick has been terrorized by dragons, living in fear of the next attack. Not anymore.

The people have just ended a bloody battle. Several people limp towards the outskirts of town, holding their bleeding wounds or new burns. In the center of town lies a slain dragon, the last full-grown one left in the world. To be honest, it looks like they've already taken care of their own problem.

A monotonous voice comes through your communication device to explain. You aren't here to help the townspeople; you're here for the dragons. The one motionless on the ground may have been the last adult, but it certainly wasn't the last dragon. Her children are located in a nearby cave, alone and orphaned. They're the ones you need to protect.

WYRMLINGS

The wyrmlings are still growing up, only the size of a small dog. Each has a slightly different appearance, but all of them have at least a few bright copper scales. They're beautiful, and they look a little bit harmless... at least, until they notice you. These dragons have never been exposed to humans before. Or anyone outside of their family, for that matter. They're small and scared, and they don't know any other way to protect themselves than to attack. Luckily, because of their tiny size, they can't do much more than small burns at a time — but make no mistake, it still hurts like hell.

The cave they're located in is pitch-black and labyrinthine. Every footstep echoes throughout it if you aren't light enough on your feet. It'll be difficult to navigate if you don't MacGyver yourself a torch or other form of lighting. Cell phones will work decently, at least until their battery dies, but you don't want to get stuck deep within the cave with no light.

If you do manage to get through the cave and rescue some without getting burned to a crisp, the trouble's not over yet. You'll have to find a safe place to stash them until they can be relocated; the townspeople aren't done with their dragon-slaying yet, after all. Walk into town with one in tow, and you're putting a target on your back. (Of course, this doesn't mean you can't do it.)

PROMPTS

ONE ✗ GOING ROGUE
Not feeling too obedient? Maybe you're ignoring the orders and helping the wounded people in town instead... or just coming to gawk. Maybe you're coming to slay the wyrmlings yourself. Whatever it is, at least try to be sneaky about it.

TWO ✗ THE DRAGON'S CAVE
Try to navigate the cave, fail to navigate the cave and get lost, or try to take the wyrmlings without getting barbecued. Somehow, you get the feeling that you aren't alone. Those footsteps are probably just your imagination... or they could be townspeople coming to kill you and the dragons. Of course, they could also be an ally, but you'd better hope you don't find out.

THREE ✗ HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
You've gotten the dragon(s) to a secure campsite out of town, but the fun's not over yet. They're kind of freaking out a little. Some of them are still spitting fire. Even the less aggressive ones are crying shrilly, bound to attract townspeople or at least annoy everyone nearby. It can't be too hard to calm them down; they're basically scaly, fire-breathing babies, right?

FOUR ✗ NIGHT TIME
It's been a long day, and now it's time for the crew to sleep. Get to know your tentmates, try to ignore them, pray that they don't want to bring along a wyrmling to cuddle... or maybe you've been put on night watch with a few others, in which case you'd better find a way to pass the time until your shift's over.

FIVE ✗ CHIT CHAT
Network option! Maybe you've got a little downtime and you're bored. Or maybe you're frantically asking the rest of the team how bad a dragon bite is. Maybe you're just trying to figure out how the hell this magical jewelry thing works. No matter what, you get one username to identify you and one only — if you don't enter one, it will default to your real name (for example, Voldemort's would be tomriddle.) Choose wisely... or make it assfarts69, if that's your thing. More information on the network is here!

SIX ✗ WILDCARD
Do whatever the hell you want. Explore the ashes of the burned city, try to run as far away from this crap as possible, or try to teach a wyrmling tricks. The world is your oyster.

Henry, please, I need you to promise me.
I can't hurt you again.

( she has no idea why Henry doesn't remember what happened, but the fact is, it doesn't matter that he doesn't remember. if there's a chance that she'll hurt him, she can't let him be near her. )

[ So something is wrong with her magic again, like when she lost control before by accident and hurt him. But what...what could have happened? She won't tell him anything if he doesn't make that promise, though, he knows.

He's not happy about this. Really not happy. ]

I promise.
But you have to tell me what happened now. The last thing I remember is we all got home safe after I rewrote Isaac's stories. Everything was ok.

( no, she imagines he isn't happy. Henry trusted her, even with her magic literally cracking in the air around him. and she'd still hurt him. she can't do that again, she won't let herself.

it takes her awhile to respond, for a lot of reasons. she pushes out some distance from camp, because her emotions tend to not mix with her magic well. she also doesn't want him to try and come to find her. )

I don't know why you wouldn't remember, but... something happened.
Gold was dying, and we tried to help him but we couldn't.
the darkness that was killing him escaped and tried to take Regina, so I tethered it to the dagger and myself to keep it from destroying her, destroying everything.
do you understand? I'm the Dark One now. I have all of that darkness now, Henry, and I can't control it, and there's nobody with the dagger to stop me, either.
so you need to stay away from me. we'll find a way to fix it, but we don't have the answers here. we won't until we go home.

[ There's a really long pause as he takes this in. He sits down heavily right where he is, his heart pounding and his hands shaking now as one soft word just falls from his lips in a pained whisper approaching a sob, 'Mom.'

Oh. He understands now. All too well. And he's devastated. ]

this can't be happening
can I see you? I mean on video. you won't let me come near you but I need to see you

[ He knows there's a video function and he just needs to see her, at least. He needs that. It's not as good as being near her, hugging her, but it's something. ]

( no, it's not as good as being able to hold him, she agrees with that. he's right, she won't allow proximity right now, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want it. she never feels quite as home as she does when she gets to hold onto her son, even if he's growing like a weed these days. and she can't grant herself that comfort, not when she can't trust herself.

she hesitates a moment at the request, but the fact is? she wants to see him too. her eyes are red and there are ghastly dark circles under her eyes, she can't tell if that's from the dark magic staining through or the stress, maybe both. otherwise, though, she looks mostly the same, though drawn and exhausted. )

It's gonna be fine, Henry. Your mom, Killian ... ( her voice cracks a little at that one and she has to close her eyes. ) my parents. Even you, I know you'll find a way to fix this.

( she has to believe that. she didn't take on this curse wanting it; there just wasn't a better option. )

We just need to get home and then we can figure it out.

( she feels like a horrible person, that she can't be with her son when she needs him most. a dark little whisper reminds her that this isn't the first time she hasn't been there when he needed her. what is this on top of ten years? )

[ Of course, Henry won't stay away for long. He doesn't do well being pushed away. And the circumstances right now are completely different, he gets that. This is dark, powerful, unpredictable magic. If this were him, he'd want his family away from him, too. So, he gets it, he really does, and he's not going to be reckless about this but he can't stay away from her forever, he just can't. This is his mom.

When he sees her face, his stomach tightens and then the emotion in her voice just gets to him as he struggles not to cry, his jaw tensing. ]

I...I broke the quill. Mom, I broke it. I could have fixed this with my quill...

[ Now it's all crashing down, he's trying to hold onto an anchor, to that belief that they'll figure this out. ]

Oh, Henry.

( she isn't in the least surprised that he'd feel guilty, over nothing. she's not surprised her kid broke the quill. they can be very alike in that. they've seen how devastating magical power can be, they don't tend to want that kind of power. she isn't mad at him for that choice. that's a lot of pressure, for him to have to use unfathomable magic to try and save her from something just as overwhelming. )

It's okay. We don't know what else could have happened, using that quill. ( she's actually a little proud of him, really. she manages a cracked smile, holding her locket close and it reminds her of trying to communicate with him in Neverland. wanting so desperately to be close, and knowing it wasn't an option. )

There's supposed to be someone that can help us. Merlin. Can you believe it, kid? Apparently that one is real too. ( she's just trying to distract from the emotion of the moment and the burning of her eyes. it's harder to pretend she's okay when she can see her son and not allow herself to be with him. )

[personal profile] thetruestbeliever 2015-09-21 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ The locket gives him that same memory, thinking back to those few days trapped in Neverland. He still has some guilt about that, too. Not much these days, he's learning to try and let go of those burdens mostly because he never likes it when his moms carry around past mistakes and beat themselves up all the time either so he can't turn around and do the same thing. But that's easier said than done because...well, they're related. It runs in the family, it's practically instinct.

It is nice to hear her support his decision. It makes him regret it just a little bit less. And he knows what she's trying to do when she brings up Merlin. He can't help going along with it because it honestly is pretty cool. He manages a slight smile back at her. ]

Merlin - seriously? Then we can definitely fix this. He's like, the most powerful magic user ever.

[ His spirits are a bit lifted at the thought, so there's that. ]

Are you...okay right now? The darkness inside, is it hurting you?

[ The moment the words leave his lips, he wonders if it's a dumb question and he's ruined her efforts to make things lighter. He supposes he means it both physically and mentally, though the mentally is really a given, that's obvious with one look in her eyes. Physically, well...it never seemed like Gold was in pain or anything but he'd had centuries to get used to it. That much magic twisting inside...he wonders what it feels like, what it does, and how he can maybe help if he needs to. ]

( Emma definitely supports his choice to break the pen. maybe it could have helped, but considering how much power it held... that seemed like too much for any one person, especially a kid. it wasn't right to rewrite fate and existence, there was too much opportunity for things to go wrong. she's quite proud of him, really. what kind of kid his age would break the device that offered so much power?

she nods weakly, head falling back against the trunk of the tree she's leaning on. )
Your Grams knew Lancelot, even. I can't believe I never told you that... ( it's a wistful tone, like she's counting how many things she'll never get to say. she can't think like that, but sometimes? it's hard not to.

the halfhearted smile she was trying to wear for his benefit does slip when he inquires about how she feels. she closes her eyes and battles with the answer. Henry knows her too well by now, that she'll tell him she's fine even if she were bleeding internally. in a situation this intense, though, she knows he won't buy it. hell, he told her once all he wanted was honesty, and she can do that. )

It doesn't hurt. Not physically. ( the thoughts, the dark whispers that she can't even be sure are hers or hints of darkness brewing under the surface? those tend to hurt. the magic an odd jangle in her chest, like dark is trying to win out the light she naturally carries. she's not sure if dark ones need to sleep, but she hasn't managed any since it happened.

there's a lot she's not saying in that answer, but physically? yeah. she's fine. the curse even healed the little nicks and burns from working with the dragons. )
I know this is scary, Henry, but I'm gonna be okay. And I need you to be okay, when I can't be with you.
