test drive

Firstly, thank you for your interest! Secondly, since the game hasn't begun and therefore characters haven't actually gone to a world yet, this test drive is going to be a little different. It's intended to be presented as a mini-mission of sorts, on a much smaller scale and timeframe than a real mission in-game but with a somewhat similar feel. Because of this, if you join the game, you're allowed to count this as game canon, so make sure you make choices you want to follow your character into the game!
You know how this works, so go forth and have fun, and don't forget to reserve!
BASICSAnwick might have been a beautiful town once. It's hard to tell now, since most of the buildings are scorched and crumbling, but they do resemble some rural modern-day buildings. Likewise, the people don't appear to be living too much in the past; several are carrying intimidating guns. For years, Anwick has been terrorized by dragons, living in fear of the next attack. Not anymore.
The people have just ended a bloody battle. Several people limp towards the outskirts of town, holding their bleeding wounds or new burns. In the center of town lies a slain dragon, the last full-grown one left in the world. To be honest, it looks like they've already taken care of their own problem.
A monotonous voice comes through your communication device to explain. You aren't here to help the townspeople; you're here for the dragons. The one motionless on the ground may have been the last adult, but it certainly wasn't the last dragon. Her children are located in a nearby cave, alone and orphaned. They're the ones you need to protect.
WYRMLINGSThe wyrmlings are still growing up, only the size of a small dog. Each has a slightly different appearance, but all of them have at least a few bright copper scales. They're beautiful, and they look a little bit harmless... at least, until they notice you. These dragons have never been exposed to humans before. Or anyone outside of their family, for that matter. They're small and scared, and they don't know any other way to protect themselves than to attack. Luckily, because of their tiny size, they can't do much more than small burns at a time — but make no mistake, it still hurts like hell.
The cave they're located in is pitch-black and labyrinthine. Every footstep echoes throughout it if you aren't light enough on your feet. It'll be difficult to navigate if you don't MacGyver yourself a torch or other form of lighting. Cell phones will work decently, at least until their battery dies, but you don't want to get stuck deep within the cave with no light.
If you do manage to get through the cave and rescue some without getting burned to a crisp, the trouble's not over yet. You'll have to find a safe place to stash them until they can be relocated; the townspeople aren't done with their dragon-slaying yet, after all. Walk into town with one in tow, and you're putting a target on your back. (Of course, this doesn't mean you can't do it.)
PROMPTSONE ✗ GOING ROGUE Not feeling too obedient? Maybe you're ignoring the orders and helping the wounded people in town instead... or just coming to gawk. Maybe you're coming to slay the wyrmlings yourself. Whatever it is, at least try to be sneaky about it.
TWO ✗ THE DRAGON'S CAVE Try to navigate the cave, fail to navigate the cave and get lost, or try to take the wyrmlings without getting barbecued. Somehow, you get the feeling that you aren't alone. Those footsteps are probably just your imagination... or they could be townspeople coming to kill you and the dragons. Of course, they could also be an ally, but you'd better hope you don't find out.
THREE ✗ HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON You've gotten the dragon(s) to a secure campsite out of town, but the fun's not over yet. They're kind of freaking out a little. Some of them are still spitting fire. Even the less aggressive ones are crying shrilly, bound to attract townspeople or at least annoy everyone nearby. It can't be too hard to calm them down; they're basically scaly, fire-breathing babies, right?
FOUR ✗ NIGHT TIME It's been a long day, and now it's time for the crew to sleep. Get to know your tentmates, try to ignore them, pray that they don't want to bring along a wyrmling to cuddle... or maybe you've been put on night watch with a few others, in which case you'd better find a way to pass the time until your shift's over.
FIVE ✗ CHIT CHAT Network option! Maybe you've got a little downtime and you're bored. Or maybe you're frantically asking the rest of the team how bad a dragon bite is. Maybe you're just trying to figure out how the hell this magical jewelry thing works. No matter what, you get one username to identify you and one only — if you don't enter one, it will default to your real name (for example, Voldemort's would be tomriddle.) Choose wisely... or make it assfarts69, if that's your thing. More information on the network is here!
SIX ✗ WILDCARD Do whatever the hell you want. Explore the ashes of the burned city, try to run as far away from this crap as possible, or try to teach a wyrmling tricks. The world is your oyster. |
Riku • Kingdom Hearts
...and then come the footsteps. the echo through the cave reverberating off the walls in-between the dragon screeches. it catches riku's attention, quicky enough for him to turn on his heels and hold his keyblade in a ready position. he may be defending himself against the dragons, but he's ready to defend the dragons and himself against anyone else who maybe be there to start trouble.]
Who's there!? [he calls out, cautiously taking a step closer to the sound. it's not helping that small fireballs are whizzing past him and he's only narrowly managing to dodge them. but hey, what's a little multitasking when you're on the job, right?]
( four ; night watch )
granted, making friendly with strangers isn't much his forte either, so he doesn't have much to say. but with things quiet for the time being, his gaze shifts towards the sky.]
At least some things don't change, no matter where you are. [he can take a bit of solace in that—he always did when it was in other worlds.]
night watch
Are they the same stars you're used to?
[ she can't recognize them at all. ]
no subject
I don't think so. But still... it feels familiar. Like it's still the same sky, just from a different perspective.
[how many worlds were under that same sky, with different constellations visible from reaching distances? it seems kind of endless to riku.]
no subject
she's quiet another moment more, considering. ]
Do you miss home?
[ he seems so young to be brought along on an assignment of this sort, and heaven knows when any of them will be able to return back home. ]
no subject
being away from home, be that his actual home or the world he's native to, is nearly second nature to him at this point. it's nice to go back to, and it doesn't feel as confining as it once did. here and now though, the problem is more that he's being taken from the things he needs to do moreso than anything else.]
I don't mind being away. If this is what we have to do for the greater good, I can put that aside. [considering he's already done it. but riku isn't about to mention how familiar he already is with the existence of other worlds and the need to protect them from harm.] There are some people I'd like to see again, though.
no subject
she's learned not to trust that phrase anymore, at least not from those in whom she doesn't have absolute faith. she's learned many things over the years, most notably what it feels like to have her innocence ripped away and her beliefs stepped on again and again. but none of those are light enough fare for a simple conversation between two associates stationed together for the evening.
riza glances back at him, a small smile on his face. she's always had a soft spot for kids. ]
Family and friends?
[ a girlfriend, perhaps? ]
no subject
he may be pretty young, but riku's already experienced a lot. maybe that leaves him jaded in some ways, having given in to the worst darknesses he could have at one time. but he's also grown enough to have a little optimism and faith that he can do more than screw up opportunities like this.]
Yeah. The kind of people you don't always realize how much you'll miss until they're not there with you. [mostly just friends. the most important friends, at that.] But if they're safer where they are, then I can wait.
[he gaze shifts to look at riza, and he gives a half-smile with a bit of a shrug. that's just the way it is, as far as he sees it.]
no subject
she answers with a return smile, slightly bigger than her last. ]
Make sure to take care of yourself then. I'm sure everyone waiting for you would want you to be safe as well.
[ she too, though she doesn't voice that last thought aloud. ]
cave story.
My name's Korra! [ and despite the fire in her hand, she comes in peace. ] Just trying to find my way through.
[ behind her, a large, bear-like head looms, floppy ears perked up as naga inspects riku where he stands. upon the saddle strapped to naga's back are a few open pouches, all of them wriggling with tiny baby dragons, their heads popped out so they can watch the surroundings. ]
no subject
which is good, because the last thing he really wants to deal with right now is another opponent. he lowers his keyblade, though doesn't yet dismiss it in case any other threats still loom.]
Looks like you've managed to calm a few of them down. [if only he had the same luck. he'd probably have to be more cautious of the babies he's trying to quell if they weren't so curious about the ones korra has. funny how that works, isn't it?]
four;
You also watch over fire-breathing, shrieking babies back home? That's unfortunate.
no subject
[riku finds himself retorting with a snort. okay, so that's not really what he meant at all, and it's probably kind of rude to take a stab at sora when he can't even defend himself.
oops.
after a second, he'll nod up towards the sky.]
What I really meant is that. The sky, it doesn't really change much... no matter where you are.
no subject
Not like he hasn't met the sentimental types before, though, and Obi finds his gaze shifting to the sky. ]
There's always a day and a night, huh?
no subject
Something like that. [there's not, really, but he won't say that directly.] It's something to count on, at least.
no subject
I can't say I've ever relied on the sky before. I'm just glad it hasn't come crashing down on our heads yet.
no subject
Well, I'm not gonna argue with that. The sky's fine right where it is—we've got enough to deal with here at ground level as it is.
no subject
[ WON'T THAT BE FUN... ]
no subject
[it's not like this was exactly their choice personally, after all.]

Seeing a familiar figure on the same night watch shift, he can't help feeling that the universe is throwing him a bone.]
Same stars, different point of view. Quite the hidden metaphor, isn't it?
no subject
Yeah, I guess it is. [his gaze hasn't shifted from its mark on the sky yet, but a smile tugs at the corners of his mouth.] It goes pretty well with the situation, that's for sure.
[after all, instead of going to different worlds for one reason, he's doing it for another entirely. the feeling is familiar, even if the reaching goal is different.]
no subject
[He sounds amused, though, looking up at the sky himself.]
Countless worlds out there with even more people on them, and each one of them has their own way to view and interact with that world. These viewpoints are never exactly the same, but they can get very close.
[Joshua pauses and then sighs softly.]
Much like how this world views dragons as something to be annihilated, but others view them as something to be preserved and protected.
no subject
It makes you wonder... How many other things are like that out all of those worlds. [how many things had been protected that ought to be destroyed? and how many had been destroyed that ought to be protected? it makes having to traverse these worlds really skate a line of morality that riku has never been able to afford to think about.]
They want to destroy the dragons because they see them as dangerous. They're a threat to the existence of these people. But the dragons are just trying to live, too. It's a balance that can't easily be destroyed. [kind of like the darkness, only on a much different scale. he lets out a thoughtful hum before shifting his gaze to joshua] I guess that probably happens in a lot of worlds though, that fear of what they can't understand.
no subject
Sad, isn't it, when people let that fear rule their better judgment? Although, I suppose it's sadder that it happens more often than not. And you can apply that same logic to when change comes around.
[People can be completely irrational in the worst ways, even if the reasons can be understood.]
It's one of life's oldest moral questions. Is one group's life worth more than the other group's when one threatens the other's survival?
no subject
[riku knows because of how difficult that road has been for him. it's not something he's proud of, that he gave in too much when he shouldn't have. even if he's better for it now and living with too many regrets over it isn't helping anything. but it means he can see both sides of the coin fairly well about certain things.]
It's a tough question to answer, if it can be answered at all. I'm not sure it's even a matter of one being worth more than the other—but even that would open up another set of questions to raise. [there is a 100% chance riku's considered things like this before. it's something he's thought about a lot, really, so that makes discussing it with someone else a chance to gain a little more perspective.]
no subject
[While Joshua hasn't experienced that fear himself, he has been on the receiving end of it. It's not something he'll ever forget, even after so much time has past since then.]
Moral questions have always been the hardest ones to handle, especially as the answer can change depending on the situation. A lot of the time, the answer isn't about what's right or wrong. It's about what's best for the long haul. [Joshua brushes ash blond hair from his face.] Just to make things more complicated, even if that decision was the best one you could possibly make, others may view it as the worst and make a villain out of you because of that decision.
[That is something he's intimately familiar with. Joshua's done a lot of morally ambiguous things, and a lot of them can be seen in the worst light possible. It doesn't help that he never explains his reasons behind the decisions and simply lets them think what they want to think.]
