TEST DRIVE MEME.

A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR ME

Welcome to the Viridian Sea, a rolling body of water populated by a small number of islands and an even greater number of pirates and merchant ships. Sailing, rum, and high-seas adventure is the name of the game for this mission: after the freshly-recruited volunteers (that's you!) are welcomed into Hathaway, they are sent via controlled interdimensional rift to deal with a certain pirate ship that has been causing a certain amount of trouble.

The crew of Red Scream, a murderous band of Mako pirates, has been reaving a path of destruction through the sea, scuttling ships of merchants, civilians, and other pirate bands alike. They have also kidnapped a governor's daughter, asking an exorbitant ransom to return her at all, let alone alive.

If this wasn't enough of a reason for Hathaway to intervene, Red Scream's current goal is firmly pointed at a legendary treasure buried in a crater somewhere in the Viridian Sea. Hathaway analysts have studied the crater and found that it was definitely caused by a temporal shard cast off from the Merging. And if Red Scream gets its hands on the shard, it'll be bad news.

The crew of Little Squid has reached out to Hathaway for help reaching the treasure. The ship and crew are both small, but they are an optimistic and hardworking bunch, and are willing to equally split the treasure with Hathaway as a reward -- they just have to reach it first.

PROMPTS

Your mission is simple: reach the treasure before the Mako pirates. If you have the time, you can try and save the governor's daughter -- it's not why Hathaway has been hired, but her father will likely be grateful enough to grant a reward.

ONE GOING ROGUE.
High-seas adventure not your cup of tea? The tropical islands dotting the Viridian Sea are flush with distractions, including pirate havens replete with gambling, food, and liquor. It's a hedonist's paradise -- if you can avoid displeasing the heavily-armed locals.

TWO LITTLE SQUID.
Ever been on a brig before? The crew of Little Squid are happy to show you the ropes -- literally -- and teach you how to be a master seafarer in no time. The only food on board unfortunately consists of salted meat and hard bread, but there's plenty of rum to go around.

Life on the seas is tough, especially during rough weather; unfortunately, they have no cure for seasickness, so if you're afflicted, you might want to head below decks and wait it out. But the view during calm waters is unlike anything else.

THREE RED SCREAM.
It was bound to happen: Little Squid runs smack dab into Red Scream on the race to the treasure. Board the enemy ship or wait for them to come to you, but either way, you'd better be ready for some close-quarters combat. The Mako pirates of Red Scream are humanoid sharks with teeth to match, so in addition to their cutlasses and blunderbusses, you'll want to avoid being bitten.

If fighting isn't your specialty, you could always hide below decks of Little Squid and hope you don't get noticed. Or, if you're feeling bold, you can board Red Scream and look for the governor's daughter, who is being kept in the captain's quarters -- she's about six years old and ready to fight, so get ready to have your hands full.

FOUR THE TREASURE.
Finally, Little Squid reaches the island where the treasure is. There are caves throughout the island where more standard pirate treasure is found -- gold doubloons in rotted old chests and the like -- but there's also a massive crater formed where the temporal shard plummeted to the surface. The crater is a wide hole with sheer walls, so you'd better find someone who can fly or brush up on your spelunking skills.

The further down you go into the crater, the darker it gets, but somewhere on the bottom an eerie blue light is glowing. The source is the temporal shard: make your way through a winding tunnel system to find it and retrieve it. But beware -- the shard has attracted temporal insects, ravenous, time-eating bugs that can slow or hasten the flow of time just due to their appetite. Find yourself in their presence and you'll be moving in slow motion or you'll suddenly be aged 50 years. The only way to stop the effects are to kill the bugs and retrieve the shard.

FIVE CHIT-CHAT.
It's your standard network option. Maybe you've got a little downtime and you're bored. Or maybe you got lost in the caves and you think you saw a g-g-ghost pirate. Maybe you're just trying to figure out how the hell this magical jewelry thing works! No matter what, you get one username to identify you and one only -- if you don't enter one, it will default to your real name (for example, Voldemort's would be tomriddle.) Choose wisely... or make it assfarts69, if that's your thing. More information on the jewelcomms can be found on the devices guide.

SIX WILDCARD.
Do whatever the heck you want! Explore the jungles and waterfalls of the islands, have a party on the beach, try to befriend a dolphin. The world is your oyster.

OOC NOTES

Welcome to the first test drive meme of Futurology Season 2! Because the season hasn't started yet, this test drive is meant to be a mini-mission, similar in feel to the missions we have in-game but on a much smaller scale. Since no characters currently have official specializations, we also have no specialized prompts, but plan to in the future. However, feel free to play as if your character is level 1 of whichever specialization you would like to choose. Please be aware this test drive is game canon. Questions about the game can be directed to the FAQ.

If you've been with us before, you might notice things look a little different around here. Make sure you check out the welcome page for the basic rundown of how your character joined up with Hathaway. For further information about the game, the full navigation has all the links you'll need.

Apps will reopen to the public on 6 January, with early apps for returning characters opening on 4 January. Apps will close when we reach our 60-player cap or on 15 January, whichever happens first. We hope to see you then!

[ --oof. Aloy slams into Lance, sending them both crashing into the railing. Momentarily disoriented, Lance blinks away the flashes of light and dark; it's only after a second that he realizes he's been toppled over by a beauty. ]

Well hello there, beautif--aaAAAAAargh move move move!

[ He shoves Aloy off and away and scrambles to make room as a rusty Mako sword slams half-deep into the wet wood. It's raining in sheets, and he doesn't have the room to activate his Bayard, but he isn't going down like this! He twists sharply, jamming his boot into the Mako's elbow when the shark-man bends to retrieve the weapon. It's bare, but there's a grunt and a turn, leaving an opening for Aloy to get a fist into the gills. ]

[The shove saves Aloy from getting speared by the sword, and though she's surprised, she's experienced enough to not let it stun her. While she's used to fighting in all sorts of weather, rain included, she's not used to wet wood; her footing slips a little under her and she loses her grip on her spear.

It's all the same, though, since it's not like she has enough room to maneuver with the weapon -- she's prefer to stab the Mako with it, but her hand will do. She's never seen a shark, but she knows enough about fish anatomy to know gills, and she jabs her fist into the filaments, twisting hard.

The Mako makes a pained, guttural sound and slashes out wildly with his sword.]

[ That's a wicked punch; he'd be impressed, if he wasn't busy scrambling back from that sword; the tip nicks him across the ear, wicked hot. Hissing, he rolls again, light flashing when he comes back up with a manifested bayard cocked flush against the Mako's stomach. Breathe in--

The blast is deafened by the rain and guts, but the white metal is sprayed red as the pirate doubles over, blood spewing from the gaping hole. Lance feels bile in his throat, teeth grit hard, tries to swallow air as he totters back up on weak knees. Look away look away look away--they don't have time to waste.

The pirate's gun is Aloy's for the taking, if she wants it. ]

[Aloy's only vaguely familiar with the concept of guns -- complicated affairs cobbled together from machine parts or machine-mounted canons -- and the blunderbuss doesn't look very useful to her. She can't see any ammunition for it, used to visible magazine belts as she is, so instead she scoops up her spear.

She's too focused on the Mako to look at Lance just yet, spinning her spear in her hand once. She spares a split second to ensure she has a tight grip, then thrusts the spear down, letting the blade slice through the side of the Mako's neck. The big hole in his stomach was probably enough to end him, but at least this way, she knows he won't be getting back up.

Flinging blood off her spear, she turns to face the rest of the deck, finally glancing sidelong at Lance.]
Alright?

Yeah.

[ Not really, but he'll have time to freak out later. He's grateful for the rain, because it hides the scent of all the blood. You don't really have to deal with this stuff in space. ]

There's more of them. You gonna grab the governor's kid? I'll give you cover fire.

[ The bayard doesn't take ammo, thankfully, and now with more room to manoeuver he can hoist it up and fire at the kneecaps of any pirates dumb enough to get too close. ]

[personal profile] datapoint 2017-12-31 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
[While they're here, she may as well. Aloy nods grimly, adjusting her grip on her spear.]

Let's go. [Expecting him to follow -- without giving him time to answer her; that's just how she do -- she starts across the deck toward the captain's cabin, keeping her body low. There's enough going on that she's able to make it through without being instantly noticed, and though she's counting on Lance to watch her back, she's still ready to plunge her spear into anyone who gets too close.]

[ The red flecks of blood on the red bayard give him a point of focus, at least, and his eyes travel from there to the red of Aloy's hair, and from there to the open air. He manages to steady his breathing.

True to his word, he shifts so he's walking sideways, though the Mako are all too occupied at present to pay much attention to them after the first guy got his due. Another seems poised to come for them--Lance shoots right through his shoulder. First one's the hardest, or something.

As they creep up on the Captain's door, Lance realizes he has absolutely nothing with which to pick a lock. ]

What's our angle of approach, here?

[ If he's being honest, he's already got something of a read on her. Fifty bucks says she pulls a Keith and just busts the door down. ]

[personal profile] datapoint 2017-12-31 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Lance wins that bet, because obviously that's exactly what she does: slamming the point of her spear between the doorjamb and the door, she heaves against it. With a grunt of exertion, the door cracks off the hinges and Aloy pushes it aside.]

We walk in, [she starts to say over her shoulder, tone dry, but then there's a little girl running toward her and brandishing what appears to be a shrimp fork. Aloy darts into the room since she can't back out with Lance right behind her, though she's already trying to find some furniture to put between her and the six-year-old.] Whoa --
ceruleo: (006)

[personal profile] ceruleo 2017-12-31 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ Welp. ]

Who-hoa, hold it!

[ Lance, reflexes honed from many years of itty-bitty nieces and nephews, snags the little girl in one arm and hoists her up before she can rush into the chaos outside; his bayard vanishes in the motion, and once it's holstered that leaves him with two free hands. He holds the child at arm's length, lucky that his lankiness keeps him out of harm's way. Just barely; that fork is nothing to sneeze at, its prongs poking into his nose. ]

Feisty!

[personal profile] datapoint 2018-01-03 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[There are a few things that happen all in a row that startle Aloy -- Lance's weapon vanishing into thin air, the way he lunges for the girl, the fact that the girl apparently... wasn't actually trying to get at Aloy... whoops -- but there's no time to dwell on any of that now, so she puts it in the back of her mind.

While Lance deals with the girl, Aloy moves back to the door to push it back into place the best she can, both so the girl doesn't dart out and also so nobody, like, sees them in here. They're less likely to be stopped if they can't be seen.]

Hey-- we're here to bring you back to your father. Don't worry, [she says, glancing over at Lance for help. She doesn't know how the hell to deal with kids...]
ceruleo: (020)

[personal profile] ceruleo 2018-01-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ The little girl is having none of it, kicking and squirming in Lance's hold. ]

Hey, hey, warrior princess! It's okay, we're the good guys! [ He debates saying 'we're here to rescue you' but visibly, that won't work here. This little girl's got it HANDLED. ] Wanna help us kick some evil pirate butt before we get you back to your dad?

[ That gets her attention, and she turns a bit more docile, watching him with a wary expression. All the shakiness that had inhabited Lance just moments ago leaves him now; she looks like a little niece in his arms. ]

Isabelle, right? [ 'It's Idabelle!!!!' ] Gotcha, Idabelle. I'm Blue, and this is Red. [ Colour-coded for convenience, plus it makes the little girl giggle. ] I see you're pretty handy with a fork...tell you what: we'll let Red go ahead and give us cover, and you and me will give her some backup.

[ He can use his bayard one-handed, so long as Idabelle doesn't try to run off. He looks over at Aloy for confirmation: he'll take kid duty if she takes point. ]
